For the synthesis project i wanted to learn more about the culture and foods of china and japan so working with my Friend Jill we learned the background and the beautiful food they make and why they make it. We also wanted to understand how they made these foods.
Our fourth project was based around synthesis which is combining 2 or more things together to create something new. I did this project with a partner who is one of my best friends Caitlin Smith. We chose our topic to be about combining Japanese and Chinese foods. We knew we wanted to cook for our project and we both have global studies this year so we decided on this topic knowing nothing about the countries food or diet. We had a lot of research to do we split up the work me doing the research about Japan and Caitlin doing research on China. We found a lot of research that helped us make and develop our projects.
Social Studies
For Social Studies and English me and Caitlin decided to make a menu that will also tie into our art project which is cooking Japanese and Chinese foods. For Social studies after we create the english part of our menu we made pages explaining the history of each dish where it came from, how it was created, and the importance of each dish to its country. We first did some research we took notes on the history of each of our dishes. Then took notes on a Chinese and Japanese diet, Chinese/Japanese diet history, and Chinese/Japanese food culture. We made one page for the Chinese dishes and a page for the Japanese ones each writing a paragraph about each dishes history. Then we made 3 pages synthesizing the history of the dishes we are combining together. On each page we explained the 2 dishes then explained how they are similar and why we are putting them together.

English
For Social Studies and English me and Caitlin decided to make a menu that will also tie into our art project which is cooking Japanese and Chinese foods. For English we used Canva to create a Japanese and Chinese restaurant menu. We first researched and took notes on Japanese and Chinese foods to first figure out what foods we wanted to make. Then we took notes on the history of each of our dishes. We took inspiration from 4 restaurants to create our own menu. We created a google doc explaining the restaurants we chose and what we decided to take from each to add to our menu. We took different components from each menu and added them to our own. Then we gave our "restaurant" a name and even translated the name into Chinese and Japanese. After that we wrote a description of each dish we are making saying what it is, where it's from, how it's cooked and served, and what we are pairing it with. Then at the bottom of the description we list the ingredients that are in each dish. At the top above the description we have the name of the food and the price in Chinese or Japanese yen and yuan. Next to our descriptions will be a picture of the food we made. Each page had 2 dishes one from China and one from Japan and they are the 2 dishes that will be combined together to be synthesized. We did that for all 6 of our dishes making 3 menu pages.

Art
For art we decided to cook 3 Chinese and 3 Japanese dishes and combine one dish from China and one from Japan each to make 3 new synthesized dishes. We did research and notes on our food anf looked up recipes to make them. Then created a google doc and wrote down our recipes and made a grocery list of things we needed to get from the store to be able to make our food at our houses. From China we made Bamboo Rice, Beggars chicken, and Dragons beard candy. From Japan we made Cows tongue, Takoyaki, curry buns. We combined the Bamboo rice/Cows tongue, Beggars chicken/Takoyaki, and Dragons beard candy/ Curry buns and we explained why in our menu. We bought all the ingredients beforehand and during the weekend Caitlin went to my house and we made the Japanese foods. Then after that I went to Caitlins house and we made the Chinese foods. While we were cooking we made a video of our process and making the food. Then at the end when all dishes were done we took pictures and put them in the menu. On the day we presented we re-heated and plated the food on Chinese bamboo plates and served them to our teachers.
